HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO BELONG?

Talent is being sought for a reading and workshop of a new musical theater production based on the screenplay, “The Mary Jane Girls” by Heidi Kozak *

Set in segregated, 1962 Texas, this coming-of-age story, follows 13 year old Julia, a brainy, perceptive, small town girl, struggling to fit in at home and in school. Julia’s world is forever changed when Melanie, her charismatic, free-spirited, 17 year old cousin, a girl with a dark troubled past, comes to work for Julia’s family. Melanie has a great heart and spirit and encourages Julia to live the life she wants, free from the shallow prejudices of her town, sister and mother. Unfortunately Melanie is unable to carry the same strength within herself. Desperately wanting acceptance, and the trappings of respectability,  Melanie will do anything to join the exclusive high school girls club “The Mary Janes” and her desire to belong could cost her everything.

“The Mary Jane Girls” is a story of friendship, loyalty, courage, forgiveness, and being true to yourself.  It explores what many individuals sacrifice in themselves to belong.
